If you have attempted to update the firmware on your Metropolis and it has failed, there are a few things to try that will hopefully resolve this problem.
1. Double Check The Obvious
First, it's a good idea to reread the instructions in the Intellijel Firmware Updater to make sure there isn't anything you've inadvertently missed.
Also, make sure you have connected the updater device to the port labelled "ICSP" and not "JP1"
2. Devices
Currently Intellijel sells the USB-ISP Firmware Uploader from our website as the recommended solution to update Metropolis.
You can order it here: https://intellijel.com/product/usb-isp/
It is also possible to perform the update using other USB ISPs which are often housed in a blue enclosure. If you are using one of these units be sure to read the following.
- if you’re using any third-party ISP, make sure that it is not set up to provide power to the device being programmed. Most of them have a jumper for this. The Metropolis CPU gets its own power from the Eurorack bus already and if the programmer is also providing power it can interfere with the process.
- Open the enclosure by releasing the 4 small plastic tabs on the back with a small screwdriver.
- On the circuit board inside, either remove or move the small jumper near the red stripe of the cable labelled “PWR” so that it’s not shorting the two pins on the header together.
- Close the enclosure back up and use the ISP.
Make sure you have the correct AVR Programmer selected in the Intellijel Firmware Updater Preferences. If you are using Intellijel's USB-ISP you should select "usbtiny", and if you are using a third party ISP you should select "avrisp2"
3. Isolate the Problem
Determine if the USB device is connected by your computer. On an Apple computer, you can check this using the "System Report..." after clicking on "About This Mac". There you can view your connected USB devices and you should see "Intellijel USB ISP"
On Windows, the key is to make sure the driver is installed and that the STM32 Bootloader is showing up in the Windows Device Manager. Also make sure that it boots up with a black screen.
Try another USB cable or USB port on your computer. It's really shocking how many times this simple step solves the problem.
Unplug all other USB Devices from your computer as sometimes they can conflict with this process.
Use a USB Hub.
